Herzog & de Meuron among shortlist for Sydney’s Bays West competition

Six design teams have made the shortlist for the redevelopment of Sydney’s Bays West competition in Australia. The teams, comprising local and international architects, will develop design proposals to transform the Sydney waterfront precinct into a new residential suburb.
Up to 8,500 new homes, including at least 10 percent affordable and essential worker housing, are envisioned for the Bays West area. The scheme will also include parks, community facilities, and new harborside public spaces.
“The caliber of teams shortlisted for the Bays West International Design Competition reflects the premier location and significance of this project and the opportunity to help shape Sydney’s newest waterfront suburb,” Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said.
Each team will proceed to develop an urban framework. A public exhibition of each proposal is planned for early 2027. The winner will be announced in February 2027.
The shortlisted teams are:
- Aileen Sage, Mako Architecture, Studio Zanardo, and Gallagher Studio
- Allies and Morrison and Bates Smart
- BVN, Cobe, and Ludo
- Herzog and de Meuron, Silvester Fuller, Michel Desvigne Paysagiste, and Buro Happold
- Karakusevic Carson Architects, Breathe Architecture, SMM, and Lahznimmo
- Mandaworks, BKK Architects, Offcuts, and Merri Studio
